Film Summary

Johnny Awful is a short film about rock and roll, lies, death, burning bridges, hoaxes, manipulation, and the fleeting nature of fame. It's a comedy. The film taps into the world of unsigned bands, the mythology of dead rock stars, and the problems that come with an entitlement mentality.

They're looking for talented, enthusiastic actors with a professional work ethic to help us bring this story alive on the big screen. They might be looking for you.
Full quality footage of select scenes will be made available to the cast for use in acting reels upon completion of the film. Here is a sample of there previous work.

Leading Roles

JOHNNY (lead singer / guitarist-25-30) is charismatic, narcissistic, and full of rock and roll attitude. Extremely unreliable, but somehow nothing is ever his fault. His favorite thing about the band is himself.
FRANK (bass-25-30) is driven, detail oriented, and wants things to be done right. Tries to run the band like a business, which is hard when he can't rely on the lead singer
DAVE (drums-25-30) tries not to get involved in band politics. A long time friend of Frank's, he really just wants to play music and avoid all the drama.

Supporting / Featured Extra Roles

LISA (mother of Timmy) is a suburban housewife who regrets, in every way, her decision to sign her son up for electric guitar lessons with Johnny.
TIMMY (son of Lisa) is a young boy (5-10 years old) who idolizes Johnny and aspires to be a rock star despite a complete lack of aptitude or promise.
BAND BRO (friend of Johnny) is an aspiring rocker, currently henpecked by his bridezilla of a sister, whose wedding reception he is supposed to play.
BRIDEZILLA (sister of Band Bro) the quintessentially high-strung bride to be, nears her breaking point when she finds that her brother doesn't have his guitar.
BAND BRO'S BANDMATES (two featured extra roles) are present when Bridezilla discovers that Band Bro doesn't have his guitar.
BICYCLE BOY (neighbor of Johnny) is a young boy (6-12 years old) whose beloved bike is stolen by the punk next door.
A&R REP (record label scout / middle-aged man) signs "Panda Rodeo," and makes his living squeezing every dime out of rock hopefuls.
RADIO DJ (male) avid rock-fan and band-follower who lives, sleeps, eats, and breathes the world of music news. Has a particular fondness for the late Tiny Tim.
MUSIC STORE CLERK (featured extra role) is a big "Panda Rodeo" fan, who proudly promotes the band in his store.
GIRL WITH THE "PANDA RODEO" RINGTONE (featured extra role) is a female trend-follower who catches the "Panda Rodeo" craze, but can't recognize Johnny when he passes her in the street.

Synopsis:

Eli is transformed in the process too and becomes a much better person.

Breakdown:

Eli, Lead Role: Caucasian male in his late 20s-early 30s, preferably blond with blue eyes and tall stature. He lives in rural NC and is a social recluse. The actor should be comfortable with simulated intimate gay and straight lovemaking scenes. There is only implied nudity for this role.

Mysterious Woman, Maya, Lead Role: South Asian or Middle Eastern looking female in in her late 20s-early 30s. Dark features, long hair preferred. She is a vision, a romantic dream. There is implied lovemaking and frontal nudity.

Farmer, Brad, Supporting Role: Caucasian male in his mid 40s, rugged, well-built, blue collar look. He just came out to his family, his wife and sons, after being in the closet all his adult life. He is on the brink of suicide. The actor should be comfortable with playing the role of a man coming out and Preforming simulated intimate gay scene.

Once he has them, he smuggles them across the border and then forces those still living into sex slavery in a small motel along the side of a highway. He has set up this sex ring with the help of a local dirty cop, Dean. Must speak some Spanish and English.

Filming is slated to star in May in North Carolina.

If you've ever wanted to be a part of the Marvel universe, here's the best chance you're likely ever going to get. Though "The Avengers" hasn't even hit theaters yet, "Iron Man 3" has been in development for a while now and is lined up as the first post-"Avengers" movie to hit theaters. Unsurprisingly, director Shane Black wants to get a head start on the project, and he's looking for actors. Lots of them.

Premiere Casting, which will handle much of heavy lifting for casting on "Iron Man 3," had some exciting news for fans living near the Wilmington, North Carolina set of the film. Turns out a lot of locals who work in the film industry could be getting jobs in the next year.

"Received an email this morning. Iron Man 3 will use about 1,000 extras during the film and there will be over 550 crew jobs and will be shooting from May 2012 until January 2013 with a Memorial Day weekend release in 2013," they wrote on their Facebook page.

The plot for the third "Iron Man" film is being kept under wraps, so it's anyone's guess what all those people could be used for. Based on the scenes of mass destruction on the "Avengers" set, though, it could be that the conflicts in "Iron Man" are having global consequences that end up involving a lot of unsuspecting civilians. Either way, star Robert Downey Jr. has said in past interviews that he has his hopes high for this film.

"Bringing in Shane Black to write and direct 'Iron Man 3' to me is basically the only transition from Favreau to a 'next thing' that Favreau and the audience and Marvel and I could ever actually sign off on," he said. "It's kind of like we're fighting on the same side and at the same time we're circling each other, so it's all great. It should be great."

"Iron Man 3" hits theaters on May 3, 2013.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- This weekend, Showtime's new series ‘Homeland’ premieres on the cable network. A lot of folks in the Charlotte region are ready to see their work on the small screen.

Much of the terrorism thriller starring Claire Danes was shot in and around the Queen City.

"It is a huge score for the Charlotte area," said Tona Dalhquist, the woman charged with casting extras for the show.

With home bases in both Columbia and Charlotte, Dahlquist has worked with some big-name productions through the years.

"Everything from Academy Award winning movies like 'Forrest Gump' to historical projects such as 'The Conspirator' or just goofy and fun projects, like 'Who’s Your Caddy' to 'Leatherheads' with George Clooney," she said.

This year alone, she's served as the extras casting coordinator not only for 'Homeland', but for the feature film, 'The Hunger Games'. "In August, I know there were days where I actually posted on our Facebook page that over 600 people are filming in Charlotte today between the two projects," Dahlquist said.

Those productions filmed in places like Freedom Park, which is featured prominently in 'Homeland's' premiere. From the campus of Central Piedmont Community College, to areas of Shelby to the old Philip Morris Plant in Concord, the extras Dahlquist casts have gotten a tremendous taste of what television and moving making is all about.

"On every project I've worked on an extra does get upgraded to a speaking line so it is kind of like winning the extra's lottery," she laughed.

The days on set can be long and extras need to know up front they're not going to get rich.

"An average project pays minimum wage for your first eight hours and then time and a half after that. Sometimes there are adjustments say if you come to a wardrobe fitting or if we gave you a haircut or if we're using your vehicle," she added. Dahlquist estimates, 'The Hunger Games' alone put roughly 3,800 extras to work and even though the feature film based on the wildly popular books has now wrapped, 'Homeland' is still shooting.

"We've probably got three or four more episodes left on season one and we just never know what we're going to need from episode to episode," she said.

Dahlquist is honored to get to work close to where she lives and thinks all the exposure is tremendous for the region. "Not only for the recognition that each project brings, but for the impact it will have on the economy," said Dahlquist. She says a lot of money is spent on lodging, car and equipment rentals and hiring workers behind the scenes.

She's found not everyone enjoys the extra experience. She usually gets one of two responses. "You are either going to love it or you're probably going to say I checked it off my bucket list and you know, that is that," she said.

Anyone interested in submitting to be an extra needs to send a current snapshot along with name, phone number, age, height, weight, clothing sizes and where you live. Dahlquist also likes to know your hobbies, your career background and what kind of car you drive. She may need it for a scene. Right now, her biggest need is for what she describes as professional business types, both men and woman of all ethnicities.

Lake Norman, NC – A taste of Hollywood is coming to Lake Norman. Brothers Jack Thomas Smith and local Michael Smith are bringing the feature film ‘Infliction’ to the Lake Norman area. This is the third feature film the two have produced together. Their last feature film ‘Disorder’ was released nationwide on DVD by Universal and New Light Entertainment and was screened at The Cannes Film Festival and the Raindance Film Festival in London. ‘Infliction’ is being produced and shot on location here from start to finish.

Jack, the Writer, Producer and Director of Infliction, will personally be at the open auditions, taking place on August 27 from 10-3 & 28^th from 12-4 at Lake Norman Performing Arts. Michael’s wife, Erika Smith, is the Owner & Director of Lake Norman Performing Arts, which is also serving as the production facility for Infliction. Michael said “ The movie needs over 200 extras and featured extras ages 6 and up so there is plenty of opportunity for people in the community to be in this film. Also, Lake Norman Performing Arts is having their Open House the same weekend as the auditions so it’s a great chance for everyone to see what a wonderful studio my wife has built for this area.”

The brothers have a long history of making movies and music starting in childhood. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, they lived there until their family relocated to a quiet island community in Michigan, which would later serve as Jack’s inspiration for another upcoming film In the Dark. Jack began to write at a very young age after reading the Stephen King novels Salem’s Lot and The Shining. By the time he was eleven, he had written a 300-page novel and a number of short stories. Michael began playing guitar and writing songs when he was five. His early favorite musicians’ were Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones among others.

The Smith’s family later moved to Sparta, New Jersey. It was there that Jack discovered the films of George A. Romero, Stanley Kubrick. Inspired to make movies, Jack wrote and directed a handful of short films that were shot on Super 8mm and starred his brother and friends in all of the roles. Michael began his role as executive producer even then. His brothers’ biggest supporter, he was always there to help bring the production together.

As a young adult, Jack began his career by producing the feature film The Regenerated Man, which was written and directed by Ted Bohus. He has since written and directed many other films. In 1998, Smith was instrumental in the re-release of Night of the Living Dead for its 30^th anniversary. He worked with Mr. Russo in the securing of funds for the shooting of new footage and assisted in the hiring of crewmembers. Smith’s production company is currently developing the action/horror film In The Dark, the drama Illegals, and the comedy Ties That Bind.

In addition to Michael being the executive producer of the film, he is also the songwriter of the music that will be in the film. Michael has had songs in movies and commercials and last year won a Collective Works award in VH1’s Song of the Year contest. Michael’s inspiration for writing songs has always come from his experiences. He played in numerous bands throughout the New York tri-state area and opened for bands such as Blues Traveler and Warrant. Michael currently writes songs, sings, plays guitar, piano, drums and bass guitar. Michael also owns and operates several medical practices in the Southeast. DETECTIVE REBECCA MAHONEY- 42 female, white - LEAD - Veteran police detective with a keen ability to get her suspect. Hard nose detective who never gives up, lost her partner a number of years back in a shoot out, and refuses to work with anyone else, she works alone most of the time, but occasionally fines herself linked up with one or another of the detectives in the squad. She really likes BATTLE, and helps him prove his theories; she is a strong ally in his efforts to solve crimes. Tough as nails, she never backs down.

HAWTHORN- 54, male, white - Over the PO office, been there for more than 27 years, straight forward guy, has no confidence in the parolees, feels their just not worth the time, feels that if anyone is accused of anything or it appears that they have done anything wrong, violate them and let the system work it out. Runs a tight office, does his job, and is very well respected.

HOPKINS- 40, male, black - Sr. PO OFFICER, his attitude is much like HAWTHORN, just doing the job because he has been there too long to do anything else, real bad attitude, will violate anyone for anything, without care. Two minutes late and he will send you to jail. Knows the job well and is feared by his parolees, they don¡¯t respect him, that respect what he can and will do to them.

CARMEN WASHINGTON- 26, female, black - Public defender, willing to do anything she can for her clients, willing to go that extra mile to ensure they get as good a defense as possible, she has a real attitude when she feels her client is not getting a fair shake. The widow of a United States Marine Officer who was killed in the line of action a year prior to their meeting, she develops an attraction to BATTLE but they never cross the line.

JACKSON- 26, female, white - Parole officer female tuff, but not quite sure if BATTLE or HAWTHORN¡®s way is the right way.

CALI- 56, female, white - Receptionist/Administrative Assistant at PO office, been around law enforcement for most of her adult life, worked in the sheriffs¡¯ office for many years and is well known and respected throughout the sheriffs¡¯ and police departments. Well connected with all parts of the city government because her late husband was in politics for many years. She provides BATTLE with information that he needs to investigate, insider information that he would otherwise not get as well as simple things like where he should look and who he should talk to about certain things.

Many actors say they’re terrible at auditioning, and then follow it up with "but I'm really good once I have the part". We all know that the film industry is extremely competitive. A bad audition wastes everyone's time, a good audition can open doors,...

but a great audition gets you cast.

With this in mind, A. Blaine Miller created “Getting the Part”, a six-week, intensive workshop for adults geared toward on-camera auditions. Classes will be held in Charlotte, NC beginning in August.

Workshop subjects will include script analysis, character break down, and relationship and technique geared to on-camera auditions. Participants will practice prepared and cold-read audition scenes. They are encouraged to bring sides for upcoming auditions and/or old sides from previous auditions.

Although the class is intended for more experienced actors, beginning adult actors are welcome to join. They will learn basic concepts about the craft and gain inside knowledge of how industry professionals cast projects.

Please note: Participants should be prepared for honest feedback. Egos will be checked at the door.

Casting Notice: "Apocrypha Episode 1" Short (Piedmont Triad)

See Jane Shoot Films, in conjunction with StumbleMuse Productions, is now casting for our first production, Apocrypha Episode 1. This is a series of 7 short films that will hopefully be shot over a period of a couple of years. It's a story of the epic battle between angels and demons and an extraordinary being that could prove to be the last salvation of human-kind.

Breakdown:
Alaina: Alaina is a physically and emotionally strong young woman who hasn’t had the best life, growing up in foster care and shuffled around to numerous uncaring foster parents. At the start of our story, on the day she turns 21, she finds out the truth behind her parentage and must make a decision. Alaina is essentially a statuesque ‘bombshell’, tall and attractive with long flowing hair.

Note: This character is involved in a choreographed fight scene so actresses must be physically fit and active. In addition to a full cast run-through, this role requires training sessions for this fight scene. As this film is the first in a series of seven, I would like an actress that will be available for future episodes.

Uriel: Archangel Uriel is the angel of destiny. He arrives on Earth to inform Alaina of her destiny. He is a tall, muscular, imposing man: someone you would not want to get into a fight with. He appears to be in his early to late 40’s.

Note: Uriel will make an appearance in several of the subsequent six remaining episodes so actors must be available to reprise the role in the future.

Jim Brewer/Leviathan: The powerful demon Leviathan is masquerading on Earth as Jim Brewer, slumlord and manager of the trailer park where Alaina coincidentally happens to live. Jim is a tall, slimy looking man (as befits his alter ego). He’s extremely persuasive and charming although Alaina can see through the act. He appears to be in his early to late 40’s.

Note: This character is involved in a choreographed fight scene with Alaina so actors must be physically fit and active. In addition to a full cast run-through, this role requires training sessions for this fight scene.

Gethel: Gethel is the angel of hidden things. Although he’s a lower ranking angel, he’s extremely sarcastic and thinks such mundane things as mesmerizing humans is below him. Gethel has a medium build and height; he has more of an intellectual look. He appears to be in his late 20s to early 30s.

Note: Gethel will make an appearance in several of the subsequent six remaining episodes so actors must be available to reprise the role in the future.

Joe: Joe is the everyday, friendly bartender at the local bar. He knows everyone in the town and is generally a good guy, willing to help out his neighbors. He is in his late 30’s or early 40’s and has a medium build and height.

Looking for cast and crew for "Dead Generations".

They plan to shoot for 18 days in the Fall from Oct-11, -Nov 4th. These are paid gigs, not going to get rich, but the best I can do with what I plan to raise. Filming in Iredell and Catawba County.

CREW:
Assistant Camera: I need someone to assist me as basically we will be together the camera department. I move fast and need someone that is also fast, this could be a great opportunity for someone wanting to become a DP, but does not have credit yet.

Audio: need someone that is really good, no much money left for any ADR, so we need to capture the best sound possible. I have gear worst case, but prefer someone that is ready to go and has the gear.

Costume: A lot of the cast will be bringing their own cloths, but need the eye and help of a pro. Also need someone who knows how to get stuff or make stuff for cheap.

FX Makeup/Makeup Assistant: Looking for both, need to see your work and will be giving you money offer and script breakdown. Think X-Files, not horror.

Grip: You will help me and camera asst get what we are trying to see, must work fast and love what you do.

Tow Truck Driver: Male, under 60 years old - Not much in lines, but important role. If you have access and know how to drive a tow truck, you get the role, if not still working on that.

The Stranger: 35-55 Male - You will just drive a truck around, a few lines, not too much, you will get a stunt double for some action scenes!

Mother: female, over 40 up to ? - She needs to be scary, raspy voice and not afraid to look nasty on film. You have to be willing to be really scary, but at the same time, your monologue has to be perfect. Break out role for someone!

They need a total of 15 extras, 2 will be featured the rest just background. You will get to play everything. Men, Woman, no children. Any age, great chance for some folks wanting to be in the movies with no experience.

Will need extras a total of 8 days, but if you can't make all days, that is fine, but the more you are there, the more you will make.

Dalliance Films LLC presents “Deceit and Desire”, a wacky comedic web series based on those 1960’s 70’s soap operas. The series will have at least four episodes and will film one episode a month, in Charlotte, NC starting July 30, 2011. This is a no-pay project, with all involved receiving full credit, and footage for their reels once the episodes have aired.

Dalliance Films, LLC, in association with Executive Producer Suzie Eckl, is casting for a short film. The script tells the story of a family departing its home for the last time. It is a quiet story with heavy emotion and very little dialog. Some improv may be required.

Roles:
Paxton: Male, early to mid thirties to play husband and dad.

Jenny: Female, early to mid thirties to play wife and mom.

Wyatt: Boy, 9 to 12 y/o. Must be comfortable with dogs.

Mary: Girl, 5 to 7 y/o. Must be really comfortable with dogs.

Terra (Dog): Must be good with children, and sit and stay when left alone.

Elevating Entertainment Motion Pictures launches production information site for their upcoming feature-length film A SEASON OF MIRACLES. Written by Rusty Whitener, the screenplay was the winner of the Kairos Prize at the 2009 Movieguide Awards in Hollywood, presented by Oren Aviv, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Productions.

A nationwide search for lead and supporting cast is underway. See the casting page for more information. The producers expect principal photography to start in August/September of 2011.

KID ROLES:

“The Robins” Little League baseball team (our heros). Kid actors may be older, but must be believable as 10-12 year olds.

Zack… 12 – Lead Role. Gifted baseball player. A leader, likeable, smart, sensitive, thinks about deep issues for a twelve year old.
Rafer… 12 – A lead role. Autistic; phenomenal baseball player. A deep, quiet soul.
Donnie… 12 – Outgoing, funny, talkative, could be “chunky” with baby fat, has a serious and sincere side. Christian.
Rebecca… 12 – Zack’s “special friend” (innocent puppy love). Christian. Smart, fun-loving. Could be tomboyish (she likes/understands baseball).
Duffey… 12 – Big for his age; the Robins’ Catcher. Cocky, but loveable, cries at the end.
Batman… 12 – Like his nickname he is cool and athletic. Very competitive.
Richard… 10 – Innocent; tiny. Worships Zack and Donnie. Intellectual for a ten year old.
BoDean… 12 – Laid back, content. Drawls. Likes to sleep and eat. Must be able to pitch.
Tigger… 10 – Tiny; nervous, frenetic. Red hair (or dyed). Hops when he should run.
Jimmy… 12 – Thinks he’s cool, but really isn’t. Can be mean, sarcastic.

Two principals on the dreaded “Hawks” Little League team . . .
Booger… 12 – The big, very mean Catcher. Cold-hearted. Gifted slugger and fielder.
Pepper… 12 – Big Pitcher; must look like he throws incredible fastball. Mean, cold.

In addition to the above principal roles, we need lots of kid actors who appear to be ten to twelve years old and enjoy playing Little League baseball. The entire “Hawks” team (the “bad” guys who appear unbeatable) is on screen quite a lot. Other team members as well, plus cheerleaders, other student roles/extras, atmosphere, etc are also needed throughout the story.

Coach… 32 to 50 – Strong, likeable, athletic in an easy-going way. A natural leader whom the kids look up to.
Del… 32 to 50 – Zack’s dad. Appears easy-going, but dealing with undercurrent of doubts/dissatisfaction with life and God.

Casting for an independent short film "Lucky Catch", set to shoot in Columbia, SC in May or June. Tentative shoot dates are still undecided, but they will most likely be on the weekend.

"Lucky Catch" is a neo-noir crime drama that follows a young man named Hunter on his wild journey after accidentally finding a map in the woods. He soon discovers that some very dangerous people are searching for the same map, as it leads to a person of extreme importance offering a very profitable reward. Not all is what it seems and Hunter soon finds out that some will stop at nothing to get a piece of the ultimate prize.

Shannon Curry- 28-34

Shannon Curry is a simple county girl. She is the divorced mother of one small boy age 6. Of course in Brentwood it is a great sin to be single parent. Shannon has worked at the doctor office since she was a teenager. She is very pretty in a simple way and always has something nice to say to everyone. She is at odds with the local church members after they confronted her about her ability to be a good parent. She is isolated in the small town and doesn’t have many friends other than at work. Her life is devoted to her son and making the best possible life for him. She wants to get out of Brentwood and is saving all the money she can to make the move.

Michael Curry 5-7

Michael is the son of Shannon. He is in kindergarten and struggles with being active with the other kids at school. The other kids are always teasing him about not having a daddy.

Patricia Manning- 25-33

Patricia Manning is maybe the most beautiful girl in town. She just returned from cosmetology school opened her own salon in Brentwood. She dresses very sensual and likes the attention it brings. Her morality leaves much to be desired, as she is willing to say and do whatever it takes to find the best husband possible. Needless to say her moral value is brought into question on a regular basic by the church members in town because of the way she dresses and carries herself. When she crosses the street EVERYONE stops and watches and that is just the way she wants it. There is not a guy in town who hasn’t tried to grab her up, and she likes to date around. But once she uses them up and cons them into spending all their money on her, she drops them and moves on to the next one.

Darnell Quincy- 38-48

Darnell Quincy is a simple man. He is dedicated to his wife and family. He brought his family to Brentwood to escape the urban lifestyle he saw destroying his children’s chances for success. He owns the local supermarket and has for the last 10 years. He has a dry wit and always calls it like he sees it. He is never without a quick comment or joke. People love him and he is a favorite among the local people. The only drawback for him and his family is living in a small town and dealing with the racism of the local southern culture. He has endured many disrespectful events during his time in Brentwood. He will put up with the treatment but never allows his wife and children to be treated in this way.

Gail Quincy- 38-48

Gail Quincy is a perfect example of a northern woman who hates living in the south. She likes the opportunities for her children but is always telling her husband that once the kids get out of college we are selling the store and moving back to Chicago. She is very active in the local community and school pta despite the racist treatment of some of the town’s people. She endures it for her children and husband with dignity and grace, but secretly she is about to explode. It may only take one or two more experiences from one of the Southern ladies to push her over the edge.

Keyanna Quincy- 20-26

Keyanna Quincy is oblivious to the racist undertones in her life. She is beautiful and popular among the townspeople, and is working at the supermarket with her family. She attended college for a few years and flunked out. She is very personable but not so book smart. She is searching for the right thing to take on as her life’s work and has been toying with the idea of joining the Peace Corps or becoming a missionary worker. She is heavily involved in the one local church and sings in the choir. She is a very compassionate soul and is always concerned with others first.

David Quincy- 16

David is a good kid who is consumed with going to college in the big city. He is very aware of the racist tendencies of some of the local towns people and reminds them on the spot when it comes up. Tho he is very polite, he does not mind pointing out the backwoods charter of the town. Of course all this is at the dismay of his dad and there is some tension between the two over this. His father conforms for the sake of making things go smoothly but David refuses to abide by this condition given by his father. He is vocal and willing to speak against the injustice he sees in this small town. David is also consumed with the rap lyrics of Tupac Shakur and is always singing and references them. He sees his idol as a hero and wants to be the same type of leader himself. He is always telling his family there is a revolution coming to Brentwood and that things are going to change around here

Heather Saunders-Age Range 19-26

Heather was a poor girl who dreamed of becoming something more. At the age of 10 her parents were killed in a car accident, leaving her without a family. After going through the legal red tape, Mayor Higgins and his wife adopted her. They had already come to love her as she was the best friend to their daughter, Lisa. Heather took to the life of a rich girl quickly and soon dreamed of leaving the small town of Brentwood for the trappings of a life in the big city. Lisa and Heather both went to school together, but while Lisa studied and excelled, Heather took to the life of a party girl. She barely made it through school. She also had a tendency to slip away to a nearby big city (at least bigger than Brentwood) for the excitement it offered. She is arrogant and conceited and often uses her families’ status to get what she wants. Lisa is the only real friend she has.

Lisa Higgins- Age Range 19-26

Lisa is a girl who, at first sight, one would not know she came from money. At an early age she learned that people would only love you because you were rich so she tried desperately not to give the outward appearance that she was from a wealthy family which was impossible living in a small town like Brentwood. She is shy and extremely intelligent and kind of bookish though even this fact cannot hide the fact that she has grown into a beautiful young woman. She decided early on that she wanted to give something back to the town that had given her family so much so she went to school to become a teacher. Her life was a routine and the only true friend she felt like she had was Heather Saunders.

Jack Higgins Mayor -46-54

Jack Higgins started life in a poor family, a fact that he longs to forget. When his parents died, he used their insurance money to buy his first piece of real estate which he resold at a substantial profit. As his wealth grew, he quickly bought up most of the free land in the town of Brentwood and either resold it to companies he lured there or developed himself and continued to build his wealth and influence. He became mayor of the town in the most one-sided victory in the town’s history. At once his demeanor changed. He quickly developed the “Big Fish in A Little Pond” mentality, believing that the town existed to serve him. He begins to act more like a king than a mayor, looking down on the townspeople with contempt and disdain and he begins using his power to influence the world around him to his benefit. The only emotional bond he has (he married his wife for her status in the community) is his daughter, whom he loves dearly. Her murder deals him a serious emotional blow and he quickly starts exerting his power on the Sherriff and the F.B.I. to find her killer.

Marcus Kincaid Preacher 47-59

Reverend Kincaid has always been a “fire and brimstone” type of sermonizer. His ability with words quickly won him a place in the town, truly thinking of himself as a Sheppard. Once he realized he had this acceptance, he began using his ministries to manipulate the town to his influence. He enjoys a shaky relationship with the Mayor, much like most men of power. He is very outspoken about the murders, showing up at crime scenes to preach and sensationalize the event. He also confronts what he calls “women of questionable moral values” and leads the town against these women as the murders continue.

Evelyn Kincaid Wife 43-55

Evelyn grew up in a small town and met her husband at a religious retreat. She is naïve and very trusting and thinks her husband is a great man. She follows him blindly and is a true believer in God and the work her husband does. This woman is defined by her husband and takes on her role in his life with blind devotion.

Mary Higgins Wife of Mayor 39-50

Mary is a very attractive socialite, if such a thing is possible in such a small town. She seems out of place here. She is very much like her husband in most regards. She is power hungry and uses her social influences to forward her husband’s agenda. Even though Lisa was her daughter, she was secretively jealous of the relationship between Lisa and her husband, feeling at most times like she was not there.

Jeremiah Brown Doctor 40-55

Jeremiah is a small town country doctor, growing up and living his entire life in Brentwood. He has general medical knowledge and still makes house calls to his elderly patients but he is ill equipped to handle the appearance of a serial killer, lacking any forensic knowledge. With that said, he makes a great deal of mistakes with the handling of the first two victims as he is unable to emotionally distance himself from the victims. (I see him in a sweater and wire rimmed glasses with maybe some graying hair. Like an elder statesman that has enjoyed the confidence that this town has given him until these murders start and he is relegated to the backseat by the F.B.I)

Linda Brown Wife 38-55

Linda lived two houses down from Jeremiah and has known him all her life. They were high school sweethearts and married while Jeremiah worked with Angus McLaren who was the town doctor until he died. She is a loving wife and very supportive of her husband. She tries to keep him motivated with the arrival of the F.B.I. and never loses hope that he may prove of some use in tracking this killer.

Jeremiah Brown Junior Son 22-27

He is the town misfit if there ever was one. He is always in trouble with the law. He has a bad boy attitude and longs to leave the town for the big city, an idea that was planted in his head by Heather Saunders, whom he was seeing. A social outcast, he sees himself as a James Dean type.

Tammy Martin Bartender- 28-36

She owns the local bar and is quite the tough lady. She takes no BS from anyone and knows how to put a drunk in his place. She has a very tender side that comes out when she is drinking, and after a hard life she shows the wear of being hurt in the past. She is a very sexy lady in the sense of her toughness and no BS attitude. The guys at the bar are always trying to pick her up but she remains single hoping for a good guy to come along and take her away from Brentwood forever.

Frank Dubois FBI Agent 47-57

Frank is a few months short of retiring and has no interest in getting involved in this case. He wants to sit at his desk and bide his time till retirement. He and his wife are moving to Hawaii to live and he is determined to not get involved in any serious cases. His resentment at his bosses for sending him to Brentwood has grown into a full-fledged resentment and it is affecting his ability to be objective about the case. He just does not care anymore. But he is the senior agent in the area and has more experience than any other available agent. His attitude lingers on the edge of indifference until he sees the shocking results our killer has on the town and it close knit community. As he gets deeper and deeper into the case, and watches as the killer’s techniques continue to become more and more gruesome, he realizes they must stop this madness at all costs.

Mark Collins FBI Agent 28-32

The perfect hotshot young detective who thinks he knows it all. He does not have much filed experience, and that is why the teamed him with Frank. His arrogance borders on the ridiculous as he questions everyone around him and their abilities. He is tech savvy and every new gadget that can be had belongs to him. He understands every facet of forensic science, and has years of experience in the lab. His expertise will be central to any hope of catching our killer. His awkward behavior towards others makes him a loner; even his mentor and partner cannot take his demeanor for long periods of time. But is abilities are unquestioned, and if he ever learns to understand how to interact with others he will become the FBI’s most outstanding agent. Till then he is an outcast who works the hardest cases with a partner who is counting the days till retirement.

Sherry Dalton QuickMart Girl 18-21

She is a very beautiful and charismatic girl. She grew up in Brentwood and has worked at the local quickmart for several years. She is very flirty and seductive. Sherry is a victim waiting to happen and once our killer notices her it will only be a matter of time before she meets him up close and personal.

Roy Emerson Sherriff 42-49

Just imagine Clint Eastwood is the sheriff of your town and you are ready to go. Roy is a hard edged, tough and soft spoken man. He only speaks when it is necessary and doesn’t like to engage in useless conversation with anybody. He is a Vietnam vet and carries himself as such. His wife was died giving birth to their daughter Sarah and he never remarried or dated. He is dedicated to raising his daughter and everything else comes secondary to that. Roy is well respected around Brentwood and everyone knows his toughness and no nonsense approach to things. He has a dry wit and sarcastic comments are the norm when he is approached with questions or comments he deems to have no value. Dirty Harry is the sheriff of Brentwood.

Sarah Emerson Sherriff’s Daughter 22-29

The sweetest and nicest girl in town loved and respected by everyone. Her mother was killed during child birth and her father raised her alone. She works as the lone deputy to her father and has auburn hair, slim build but is very beautiful. She is a natural beauty and doesn’t use much make-up and dresses very conservatively. Sarah is known around town for her generous and kind spirit and is always helping out the local townspeople. She studied investigative techniques at college and returned to follow her Dad as the local law enforcement after graduation. She does not have a boyfriend, but every guy in town who is single wants the chance to be her guy. She is very close to Heather and Lisa; they grew up together and are best friends.

Bobby Emerson Sherriff’s Brother 30-39

Used to be his brother’s deputy for years but was forced off the force because of his alcoholism. He is sober now, for 3 years, and works at the local tool factory with most of the other people in town. He is quite and simple. Never says much. He is embarrassed by his removal from the force and the local townspeople don’t let him forget what happened. He is saddened and guilt ridden from the events that embarrassed his family and struggles with wanting to drink again.

Molly Emerson Bobby’s Wife 29-39

Molly is very controlling of her husband because of their past history and is so caught up in keeping him sober she has no clue what is going on with her daughter. She is always checking on her husband and his whereabouts, calling him several times a day. His life is centered in holding together her marriage and controlling every move her husband makes. Molly does not go out and associate with the other townspeople because she is ashamed of what happened with her husband. She lives the life of a recluse and almost all of her human contact comes from her husband and daughter.

Bobby’s Daughter Kerri-13-17

She is very mature for her age and often mistaken for a much older girl. She is mature physically and uses her looks to take advantage of the local boys. Kerri is not much of a student and gets away with her bad behavior because of her father’s guilt

Henry Ellison Deacon Age 38

Henry has always been a religious person. At an early age he found the church and often dreamed of being a preacher but lacked the courage to make an honest attempt at it. After moving to Brentwood, he quickly set himself up as the Deacon at the towns’ only church. He was welcomed in and felt at home with one exception: Pastor Kincaid. He didn’t like him from day one; there was just something about him. He began keeping a close eye on the preacher after he begins to incite the congregation to further his own plans. He is a decent family man but is shy and lacks courage.

Elizabeth Ellison Deacon’s Wife Age 37

Elizabeth and Henry were high school sweethearts. They ran away and were married the day after Elizabeth graduated high school and roughly nine months later their first child, a daughter, came along. She is a stay at home mom raising two children, which are the basis for her life.

Josh Ellison Deacon’s Son Age 12

Josh is your typical 12 years old. He is bright and well mannered.

Amanda Ellison Deacon’s Daughter Age 18

While other girls her age spent their time at the mall and chasing boys, Amanda spent her time with her face buried in books. She spent most of her scholastic career in the library and her desire is to be the town librarian. She works at the Brentwood public library at the circulation desk where she ahs to fight off the advances of the librarian, Harlan Reese, whenever she works late. Most people comment on how shy she is and how she might be pretty if she used a little makeup and wore different clothes.

Harlan Reese Librarian Age 61

Brentwood librarian. He has faithfully served in this capacity since his graduation day. He would tell you that books are his life and people believe him. But his secret passion is the girls that come into the library. He only hires assistants that he thinks he can take advantage of. Calling him a dirty old man would not be too far of a stretch.

Cheri Stinson Doctor’s Secretary Age 29

Cheri moved to Brentwood to escape her past. She lived through an abusive relationship which she was lucky to survive. After the police shot and killed her ex, she thought the quiet trappings of a small town were exactly what she needed to put it behind her. She is a strong woman, confident and pretty.

Anna Hatch Nurse Age 26

Anna is another transplant looking for the quiet life. She loves the excitement of the big city but the quiet that country life can give. Here she has both since the city is a short drive from Brentwood. She is a Goth with tattoos and jet black hair. She is strong and not to be toyed with.

Alvin Higgins Mayor’s Brother Age 47

Alvin is the shy, quiet counterpart to his older brother. He has always been the one that his brother has had to carry. Alvin’s life was defined by his relationship with his mother, if you could call it that. She was domineering and cold and it had its effect on the brothers: Jack becoming just as cold and calculating and Alvin becoming an emotional wreck. He married a woman who is very like his mother and his daughter is already showing the signs of following in those footsteps. Alvin owns a construction company which was given to him by his brother.

Marybeth Higgins Brother’s Wife Age 39

Marybeth recognized weakness the moment she saw it and did she ever see it in Alvin. She also recognized wealth and she also saw that in Alvin. She married him as quickly as she could and began to assert her dominance immediately. She holds him under her thumb constantly. He can make no decisions without her okay. She is cruel, sometimes beating him to keep him in his place. He cowers at the sight of her.

Elise Higgins Brother’s Daughter Age 18

Your standard rich girl. She loves flaunting herself to the local boys whenever she can just to drive them wild. It is a look but don’t touch scenario. Secretly she fears an intimate relationship after watching what goes on between her parents.

Stanley Higgins Brother’s Son Age 22

Stanley is a veteran of the Iraq War. A marine who was wounded in battle and suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, Stanley is a loner for the most part.

Claire Simmons Widow Age 70

Claire was married at an early age and saw much of the history of the 20th Century. Her husband worked in the local mill after being discharged from the military and worked there until a tragic accident took his life. After that, Claire dedicated herself to her church and helping what she deemed as “those poor unfortunates”. She becomes the perfect assistant in the Preacher’s drive to rid the town of the “Harlots of Satan”.

Charles Dalton-age - 34-42

Charlie is the lead Project manager for the mayor’s construction firm and a regular at the local bar. If he is not at work then you know where you can find him. He is always quick with a word for the ladies and is known around town for going through all the local girls like candy.

Jimmy Phillips-38-43

Local insurance agent. He can be found with Charles on most nights reliving the past at the local bar. He married his high school sweetheart and they have two kids.

Nadine Phillips-38-43

Jimmy’s wife. She is stubborn and the typical southern redneck woman. She is loud and unabashed with her comments and opinions regardless of who it hurts or affects. A reason that Jimmy spends a lot of time at the local bar.

Jimmy Phillips Jr. - 8-11

A good student and little gentlemen. He follows his dad around town most of the time, and is becoming a clone of the man.

Deanne Phillips-16-19

Deanne is blossoming into a beautiful young woman much to the dismay of her father. She stays out late and parties with her friends. She is headed to college after the summer is over, but till then it is party all the time for this young lady.

Upcoming webseries titled 'Go Fish' is casting for featured roles and background talent.

Go Fish is a dark sadistic comedy about two childhood girl friends who murder lonesome drivers from town to town while they hitch-hike across the US. Ariston is a light, whimsical and friendly sociopath, while Zoey is a reserved, pensive psychopath. Together, they travel the highs and lows of the open road while memories of Zoey's dark past start to resurface as their "extra-curricular activities" escalate. Zoey begins to question the meanings of 'friendship', 'co-dependence', and 'reality', as, together, they also learn a bit about evading the law and new murder techniques.

Things get more awkward when Garrett accidentally takes the pizza guy and the pizza guy’s sweaty girlfriend hostage after they stubbornly won't die from the poison he slips in their drinks. The situation goes from bad to….well more bad… as the English language impaired landlord Barry gets put out that hostages are being held at his property. It sucks, but Garrett may just have to kill everyone.

He just feels like he has to do it and he feels a little bad about it so he tries to be real nice to her throughout the process. Queen City Theatre Company announces auditions for the musical "Chess" to be held on Sunday February 6th at 4 pm and Monday February 7th at 7 pm (end time may vary, please sign up at start time). Please contact QCTC for special considerations in regards to available times. Individual appointments available. Call backs will be held Tuesday February 8th.

Chess is a musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA. The story involves a romantic triangle between two top players, an American and a Russian, in a world chess championship, and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other; all in the context of a Cold War struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union. Chess the musical started as a concept album and opened in London’s West End in 1986 playing for three years. A much altered US version premiered on Broadway in 1988. Many productions have been created using a revised book, often mixing the London with the Broadway Score. In 2010, a new official revised edition was created by the authors and has only been seen in the United Kingdom on tour, and now, for the first time in North Carolina, in Charlotte.

Queen City Theatre Company’s production of “Chess” will be directed by Glenn T. Griffin, choreographed by Heidy Ludden and Musical Direction by Marty Gregory and overall production coordination by Kristian Wedolowski.

Freddie Trumper (The American) - 25 to 40s - stipend available:

American Chess Champion. Freddie is a mix of Chess Champion Bobby Fisher and Tennis bad boy John McEnroe. Freddie is a chess genius, but also enjoys the publicity and fame that the game brings him. This role calls for a strong tenor singer with a rock edge.

Svetlana Sergievsky - stipend available - 20s to 40:

Wife of Russian Chess Champion Anatoly Sergievsky. Left behind by her husband once he defects to the United Kingdom, she is used as a pawn by the KGB to get her husband to return to Russia. The role of Svetlana calls for a female with a strong belting voice and sings such songs as: Someone Else’s Story, Heaven Help My Heart, and Endgame.

Walter De Courcey - stipend available - 30s to 50s:

FBI Agent for the United States of America. Enjoys manupilating the members of the Chess federation for his own political games. Baritone.

Chess Ensemble:
This is a great opportunity for strong male and female singers and dancers. The Ensemble plays citizens of Merano, dancers in Bangkok, Civil Servants, Merchandisers, Ambassadors, etc. (Age Range of Ensemble is 15-40’s) - The ensemble in Chess is key for the overall plot and vision of the production. Every ensemble member will be featured and they are on stage for the entire show.

*NOTE: The roles of Anatoly Sergievsky, Florence Vassy, Alexander Molokov and The Arbiter have been pre-cast.*

Synopsis: A young man, Daniel Fall, comes back home from a stint in the army to face the family he left after his young wife, Emily, was killed in an auto accident. Turning Home is about facing the problems you left behind, dealing with grief, and celebrating the things worth living for.

A note from the writer: Turning Home is a story of love, loss, forgiveness and letting go. A young widower returns home from the war and strangely finds comfort in the company of his late wife, now a creation of his mind perhaps from his undying devotion to her.

Emily, 24 (seeking ages 20-26): Ethereal/other worldly, kind. Celebrates life. Loves nothing more than Daniel. Emily is a young woman who died tragically in a car crash in her early twenties. She reappears as a ghost in Daniel's life whose goal is to help him let go of the past. There is an all-knowing quality to the wisdom she dispenses, though she is never above a well-crafted jibe aimed at Daniel.

Ashely (early 20's)-- Artist. Frustrated, hiding- anxious but bubbly. Wants to be artist but hiding behind presumed responsibility. Attracted to Daniel, probably always had a crush on him even while her sister, Emily, was dating him. She connects with Daniel as she reminds him of Emily.

Wes (late 20's) About to get married to pregnant Natalie. Worried about settling down from the life of a bachelor. Trusts Daniel, sees something in him others do not. Brother to Emily and Ashley.

Natalie (Wes' fiancee): Sweet, bubbly, charming. Natalie is pregnant. She is impulsive and kind but sensible. She wants Wes to be more involved in the planning of the wedding and more excited about the big change.

Carmen (potentially either 30's or 40's): She is a co-worker of Natalie, one of her closest friends. She is sensual, exotic, confident. Throughout the story she is persued by Wes’ friend Shakes. She is flattered but sees through the games of young men.

Shakes (late 20's): Overcompensating for a lot of low self confidence. Formerly a large kid, trying to take life by the reigns and create a new identity for himself. Equates being a ladies man with being successful.

Eddie (late 40's-50s, latino): Down on his luck father of Daniel, looking to make good.

Martin (Emily's dad): age range: 50's-60's (late 40's possible) Calm, warm and patient. Grieves for his daughter. Wants to keep family together.

Elizabeth: (Emily's mom): age range: 50's-60's (late 40's possible) deals with grief of losing her daughter in her own way. Independent woman.

Ronnie (Wes' friend): Moody instigator. Cannot accept Daniel's return.

Had you crept into the ghostly, abandoned hosiery factory on North Davidson Street one recent Saturday night, you might have seen fierce little men wearing beads, pigtails and flowered dresses, playing life-or-death games of hopscotch and patty-cake.

Assuming you were sober, you'd have been trespassing on the set of "40 Fears," which Dalliance Films will finish shooting on Sunday.

The title refers to the anxieties of a man who has just turned 40, and whose family suddenly seems to have crawled up out of Hades: His children are a drug dealer, a Satanist, the town strumpet and a gee-whiz boob who might have strayed from the set of "Happy Days." Though this darkly comic feature is the story of a nightmare, Dalliance itself is the culmination of a dream.

The four dreamers are within a few years of 40, on one side or the other. They've spent two decades each in various jobs, so none of them are kids with stardust or huge dollar signs dancing before their eyes. Their cinematic vision is clear, and their address is the intersection of Art and Commerce.

Tim Ross, a veteran Charlotte actor who also produces for WFAE-FM, thinks that's a good place for them to be.

"I love this company, and '40 Fears' is one of the most innovative, funny scripts I've read in a long time," says Ross, who plays the lead. "This film has the chance to achieve cult status. It touches on issues we all face and has a serious message underlying the insanity. ...

"I have also seen some of their other work. They have a bright future ahead, considering projects (in the) pipeline."

That pipeline is what sets Dalliance apart from many a young production company.

Most small production companies everywhere - especially in Charlotte, where they are countless - plan one film at a time, raise money from friends and family, make a feature for release on DVD and the Internet, then climb the mountain again if they have energy left. Dalliance wants to climb two mountains at the same time.

While members of the team shot a second short, the thriller "Three for Dinner," as a calling card for investors, others gathered money for "40 Fears." Now "Fears" is underway, and investors are sought for "Timing," described in a prospectus as "'Three Men and a Baby,' if all the men were gay, and the baby was 17." Dalliance hopes to shoot it next spring for about $250,000, a huge increase over the roughly $7,000 spent on the self-financed "40 Fears."

Charlotte's Phil Wells has already come in on "Timing." He says, "Since the first of the year, I've been approached by half a dozen people wanting capital. Dalliance Films is the only one (with) which I've invested.

"Based on what I've read about filmmaking in North Carolina - that it will continue to prosper - I think this is a good industry in which to invest.... (The movie) has an angle not many filmmakers are presenting: a topic involving gays and lesbians. Altogether, it's a project I wanted to be part of."

Assembling the pieces

The gears of this machine began to spin five years ago, when A. Blaine Miller directed the Civil War love story "The Last Confederate." He brought old friend D.J. Barton to Columbia to assist on the production; there they met Kathryn A. Taylor, working on her first film as a grip. Keith Sweeney entered the picture when he and Blaine became a couple.

The four personalities interlock like puzzle pieces. Once they realized that, they went into business together in 2008.

"D.J. is insanely specific with writing details: story and character arcs, continuity, knowing whether dialogue works," says Miller. "He's seen a million movies, and he's good at casting. And he yanks a knot in your butt if you act like a diva."

"Blaine brings us the passion as the writer-director," says Sweeney. "He envisions all the possibilities for a project, then gets tunnel vision about making the art. And he works fast."

That's the creative team. How about the financial side?

"Keith ... is focused, great at reading people and motivating us," says Barton. "He can talk to anyone."

"Kathryn is the communications hub and operations center," says Sweeney.

Barton, a veteran of local indie features, calls her the best script editor he's seen.

The four vote on decisions, though they have no tiebreaker should they disagree. (They say they've never needed one.)

Using resources wisely

They shot nightmare sequences for "40 Fears" in the house Miller and Sweeney share, then went next door to Barton's house to shoot flashbacks. The crafts table on the set has no pricey bottled water; instead, it offers multi-gallon jugs of iced tea and lemonade.

They found the owner of that vacant NoDa factory - the one with a smokestack that says "Chadbourn" - through Ross, renting a lot of spooky space for a little coin. By doing so, they met one of their other goals: helping locate resources for others in their industry.

"So many local filmmakers don't envision (possibilities) beyond the bubble of their own projects," says Sweeney. "They don't know how to network."

Though Dalliance set sail during a brutal recession, its founders don't expect to flounder.

In fact, they hope to help other moviemakers stay afloat.

"It's our goal to promote people from the Carolinas: composers, writers, editors," says Miller.

"It would be great to have a homemade film industry, but that can happen only if the industry grows here."

Film company focuses on story, character

Charlotte-based Dalliance Films plans production on gay-themed ‘Timing’

“I’m for it,” Blaine Miller humorously exclaimed when asked how he and his business partners identified their sexual orientation.

Miller, the creative force behind Charlotte-based Dalliance Films, has poured his heart and soul into writing and directing the up-and-coming film company’s projects since they first incorporated in September 2008. Miller, who is gay, and partners D.J. Barton, Kathryn Taylor and Keith Sweeney have created something to be proud of — a film production company unwilling to shy away from important, interesting and compelling storylines and characters.

Currently, the team is working on editing and post-production for “Three for Dinner.” It’s their second short film — an 11-minute, 46-second thriller they hope will make a splash at top-tier festivals like Sundance.

“Three for Dinner” tells the story of a wealthy family who falls prey to a home invasion, but Dalliance’s production materials caution:” Things aren’t always as they seem. As fact is separated from fiction, the lines between criminal and victim are blurred in this gripping whodunit that celebrates the forties’ style of film noir.”

“The feel’s period, but it is very much a current-day story,” Taylor, a straight ally, said.

It’s also the first time the company has shot with two cameras, a test run for their much-anticipated, gay-themed “Timing” — described by the company as “’Three Men and a Baby’ if all the men were gay and the baby was 17.”

“Editing on ‘Three for Dinner’ was intense, because we were using two cameras at one time,” Miller explained. “In the edit, we end up with twice as much footage to cut because we have two cameras rolling. It ended up being a longer process than usual, but it was a good test to see complications, if it will help or hinder us.”

Taylor and the team still plan on shooting “Timing” with two cameras. The film, originally set for production this summer, has been pushed back to next year because of the recession, but the film has been in the works for years.

“I met Blaine and D.J. on a movie set in Columbia back in 2002 and we became best friends,” Taylor said. “Blaine had written ‘Timing’ while directing ‘The Last Confederate.’ Once I moved back to Charlotte we had worked on trying to get it produced through another production company. After lots of emails and letters and not much response we decided, ‘You know what? Maybe we should just do this ourselves.’”

That’s when the three brought in Sweeney, and Dalliance finally took shape. The four complement each other in ways that create a vibrancy needed for good business: Miller the creator, Barton on visual story and character, Sweeney on business and organization and Taylor working to connect the creative and business components together.

“Some of the challenges we were facing with ‘Timing’ — not being able to get anybody to accept or read the script — was because it was unsolicited material,” Sweeney said. “We brainstormed ways around it, and figured if we couldn’t get them to read 90 pages of a script maybe we could get them to watch four minutes of video. We took pieces of the full-length script, created a promo trailer in the four-six minute range that would tell the story. If we could catch their attention for four minutes, we’d stand a better chance of getting to read the script.”

It wasn’t meant to be. The trailer, shot in and around Charlotte, still didn’t get the attention Dalliance needed. But, Sweeney said, the trailer “did get the ball rolling and really shaped our path for the year ahead.”

As Dalliance got off its feet, they decided to focus on other projects, including “Three for Dinner.” They also plan to start shooting “40 Fears,” a dark comedy feature, later this year.

“’40 Fears’ presents an opportunity to get this out on the heels of ‘Three for Dinner’,” Taylor said. “The hope then is that we can distribute it and we can strengthen our company for ‘Timing.’ We’ll have shown we can make a film and follow through on it.”

The company, even with three gay principals, doesn’t identify itself as a gay film production company, Sweeney said. Regardless, the four all agree: some stories are just too important not to tell. In the broader media environment, Miller said, LGBT people are often still marginalized or sensationalized, especially on TV.

But all that is starting to change, as LGBT characters and storylines take root on some of the most popular cable and network series. Like mainstream media’s trend of creating gay characters with depth and meaning, Dalliance hopes its ‘Timing’ will shine through as a true family tale, with “gay” as an afterthought.

“I think the transition has already started,” Miller said. “Look at ‘A Single Man.’ It wasn’t about a gay man in the 1960s. It was about a man who happened to be gay who was dealing with the loss of someone he loved.”

Taylor agreed — it shouldn’t be about the characters’ sexual orientations. “We don’t care what their sexual orientation is. What is important is their story.” : :

Jack, a delinquent teenage boy, runs away in hopes of reuniting with Jesse, the gay father Jack hasn’t spoken to in seven years. Jack’s timing couldn’t be worse. To the shock of his father and his father’s partner, Connor, the boy shows up in the middle of their marriage proposal. Even more shocking, both Connor and Jack didn’t know the other existed. The party transforms into a true Dynasty moment as Connor and Jack storm out in opposite directions.

Torn between the two, Jesse doesn’t know whom to go to first. The couple’s snarky best friend, Patrick, takes charge. He shoos Jesse after Connor and then rushes after the boy himself. Patrick’s love for his friends, his pity for the confused boy before him and the “blunt” Jack pulls from his backpack all help Patrick convince the boy to stay. Meanwhile, Jesse is less successful.

Connor packs a bag and goes…across the street to stay with the neighbor, Dale. Tense weeks go by as Jesse and Jack try to rebuild their relationship. However, even as father and son make progress, Jesse can’t seem to patch things up with Connor. The couple continues to drift further and further apart.

Dale watches as Connor acquires a glut of new habits — going days without bathing, strewing trash, and drinking continuously — until he can’t take anymore. Dale teams up with Patrick (a la “I Love Lucy”) to step in, intervene and accelerate the healing process. The plan works! The couple reunites, Jack gets back on track, wedding arrangements are made, and everyone blends into one big happy family. Until…

There’s a knock at the door. It’s two weeks before the ceremony and the son’s girlfriend, Cara, is standing there. Scared, alone and very pregnant. At this pivotal moment, can this group of gay men convince the straight boy to “man up?” Will the coming baby get more presents than the happy couple? And, more importantly, can Jesse endure his new title: Grandpa? : :

A few tips for actors… Part 2

Ok, as most of you know, I have spent the last month casting Dalliance Film's latest project "40 Fears".

So these tips come from some of the things I noticed this time around:

1st Have an updated head-shot! I know I have said it before, but it amazes me how old some head-shots are, when they are submitted to me. You must walk in the door of a casting call looking exactly like that head-shot. If you don’t look like your photo, you will have immediately alienated yourself.
And DON'T FORGET TO BRING A COPY OF YOUR HEAD-SHOT AND RESUME TO THE AUDITION!

2nd Read the "casting call"! If you don't fit, or don't pay attention to the wording, or requirements then you send the wrong message submitting. If you are unsure about something in the casting, then ask for clarification! If you don't, then you run the risk of driving the casting director crazy, and imply that ("if they can't read the casting call, than what makes me think they will be reliable if cast.").

3rd If you are submitting your head-shot and resume by e-mail, then make sure that the file name, has your name in it! Don't send a casting director a file that says "resume", or "HS34". Just imagine how many actors are applying, you don't wont to get lost in the shuffle.

4th If you set-up an audition, then show at that time! Don't ask to be rescheduled, or not show. This is a job interview, all you have done is show that you are unreliable! You will risk not only damaging your reputation, but getting blackballed by this casting director. An lets face it, it's a small world, and a small community.

Acting is a craft! It can be painful and it’s hard if you’re doing it right. It’s a job, sure you have fun, but you’re gonna need to put in the work!

This will be a low-budget, no-pay, non-union feature shooting over 6 weekends between August and December 2010.

Burt- A forty year old man, married with four kids, in a mid-life crisis. Good looking, decent shape, sarcastic, smart. (Actor will play age range between late twenties to forty. Partial Nudity/G-string. Must have great comedic timing)

Marion- Burt's wife, late thirties, a true beauty. Smart, funny, amorous. (Actress will play age range between late twenties to late thirties. Partial Nudity/ Underwear. Must have a wicked sense of humor)

Richie- Burt's oldest son. Eighteen, American as apple pie, heroic, smart, sweet, tall, good looking. (Actor will be required to use sign language and be able to lift another person)

Alex- Burt's middle son. Sixteen, Sarcastic, brooding, dark, good looking. (All actors must be at least 18)

Barney- Alex's twin brother. Sixteen, a bit chunky, not the sharpest tool in the shed. (All actors must be at least 18)

Gino- Marion and Burt's Latin lover. Mid thirties, overly macho, overly confident, sarcastic, dark, good looking. ( Actor must have a convincing accent and some nudity is required)

Poco- Alex's drug buddy. Sixteen, tough on the outside , smart, funny, obnoxious. (All actors must be at least 18)

Peggy Sue- Richies perky girlfriend. Eighteen, overtly sexual, not the brightest light in the room.

Grunt- Rough, tough biker. Twenties, tattoos, grunts instead of speaks. (Actor will be required to drive a motorcycle)

Burt's Dad- Well meaning, pleasant, a true 1950's type dad. ( Actor will play age range between late twenties to mid forties)

If we reach our Kickstarter goal, the funds raised will go towards set dressing, props, wardrobe, festival fees, and food for the cast and crew. Everyone associated with this film has offered their time, talent, and equipment free of charge. The cast and crew are excited to get started and so are we.

A few tips for actors…

Acting is a craft! It can be painful and it’s hard if you’re doing it right. It’s a job, sure you have fun, but you’re gonna need to put in the work!

So there are a few things any actor should know, before getting in front of a casting agent.

1^st Have an updated headshot, have them done at least once every two years. (Every six months if you are between 15 and 21 y.o.) Your looks and styles change, have your headshot reflect it! You must walk in the door of a casting call looking exactly like that headshot. If you don’t look like your photo, you will immediately alienated yourself.

2^nd Get yourself a reel. Get copies of footage from everything you do. Be persistent, get your footage and show your stuff… Having a reel will show an agent what you can do and your versatility. I personally keep reels on file, and I will refer back to them when a new project is being talked about. If you are brand new, do some scenes with friends, film it, edit it. It’s a bit more risky, but casting directors want to SEE your performance, not just READ your resume. A hardy resume is great, but this is a visual business!

3^rd Find a great teacher and take a class (ask other actors for referrals). If the teacher isn’t about showing you internally how to get there, then they are probably not a great teacher. Think about it this way, there are two kinds of directors out there. The one who is all about the visuals, and the one who is about the performance. The one who just cares about the visual would never help you get the performance. You may get cast, but your performance is up to you, if you don’t know how to get there, or understand the character, your reel will reflect it. And if that happens you have developed a reputation, you may never get past a casting agent and in front of a director.

4^th Get an agent. When you are looking for paying gigs an agent is critical! Here is the vicious circle… You can’t get an agent until you’ve worked, you can’t work until you get an agent. A reel really helps here, even if you have only worked for free. NEVER trust an agent or agency that says you have to pay them or requires you to use their person for head shots or classes. Also an agent isn’t going to get you all your work - again, be persistent, call them once a week. Go out on your own, read the trades and industry Websites, and check for auditions daily. Having the agent just makes getting in the door easier. You still have to do the work. And the bigger you get, the more they negotiate your contract.

Ok, so it’s called “Rants of an Indie Film Maker”. So here's Rant #1:

As you may know, Dalliance Films is in the process of launching its first feature film, “Timing” (Haven't heard of "Timing"? Go here Dalliance Films projects).

As the principal casting director for Dalliance, I have been actively trying to cast the film. This isn’t easy when you’re not fully funded. I have been successful with the leading men: Colin Ferguson (“Eureka”, “More Tales of the City”) has agreed to lead the ensemble cast in the role of Jesse. Sean Maher (“Serenity”, “Brian’s Song”) will play opposite him as Connor, Jesse’s love interest.

Something happened recently that made me crazy. I had contacted an agent about an actress for the character of “Terry”. The actress is great and we were really interested in her. The agent made a point to call me and told me that he personally had read the script and “loved it”. He was so interest in having the actress in our project that he actually sent a list of actors in his agency he thought could round out our cast. I was amazed that someone would take the time – not to mention, some of his suggestions were great. Then, the actress got a lead in a new series – great news ‘cause I really like her!

Now here is the part that made me crazy…
Remember the agent who was so into our project? Gone. Disappeared. Doesn’t return phone calls or e-mails. Didn’t even let me know that his client got a new series – I found that out on my own.

Heads to Cape Fear Film Festival

I head to Wilmington, NC with the Dalliance Films business partners, (A. Blaine Miller, Kathryn A Taylor, and Keith Sweeney).

Why?

Because "Back in the Saddle" was accepted at the Cape Fear Film Festival. Dalliance Films will be on hand at the premiere on Saturday, May 2 at 3:00 pm. Please join us at the Opera Room, 119 Grace St, Wilmington, NC! Hope to see you there!

Logline: A young man gets more than he bargained for when he volunteers to help his dad get "back in the saddle."

"Back in the Saddle" was named the winner of the first annual Charlotte Film Community 72-Hour Film Challenge and was also awarded "Best Comedic Moment"! The contest dared filmmakers to create a five-minute film in just three days. The films were premiered in September and more than 300 local industry filmmakers and guests turned out to vote for their favorite.

A Bit of a Bio

I began his career in the entertainment industry at age 11 when he began studying dance at the Virginia Beach, VA. When a knee injury ended his dance career at age 15, I might have shelved my childhood plans. Instead, I shifted my focus to theater, which I pursued through high school. After graduation I worked with several independent theater groups.

After relocating to Charlotte, NC, I took an active role in the sketch comedy troupe “This, That, and the Other” in 2000. It was there that I first met Director A. Blaine Miller. In 2001, Blaine invited .me to join the production crew of the independent film “The Last Confederate” as the script supervisor and continuity. During filming, I met Kathryn A. Taylor who I – along with Blaine – would later collaborate with on the film “P.O.V. (Point of View)” (2006) as script supervisor and continuity. I worked with Blaine and Keith Sweeney as script supervisor and continuity for the promotional trailer for “Timing”, a project currently in development.

Since filming the promotional trailer, I have stepped into the role of Principal Casting Director within Dalliance Films. It was through my concerted efforts that the company was able to garner interest for “Timing” from Colin Ferguson and Sean Maher. I continue my efforts to round out the principal cast with talent that complements the leads’ styles and looks while bringing additional star power to the film.

I discovered my love of writing after working as editor and contributing writer for the Virginia theater magazine entitled, On Stage. Since then I have written the feature-length script “Sweet Amber” and I have collaborated with Blaine on two others, “For Cole” and “Roster”.

Most recently, I was the associate producer on Dalliance Films’ “Back in the Saddle” (2009) created for the 1st Annual Charlotte Film Community (CFC) 72-Film Challenge. I also worked as the Script and Continuity Supervisor on the set. The film was voted the winner of the competition by more than 300 Charlotte film industry professionals, and has been accepted into the Cape Fear Film Festival, and will show May1st.

I am currently an active member of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Business Guild. I am a principal in Dalliance Films, a Charlotte based production company.
